THE SASANO-BORI (hand carved birds)
This carving is very unique folk wood craft, which has been handed down from generation to generation in the northen Japan. "BORI" means carving by chisels. This art has been made with well trained stokes of a special chisel and even curled thin leaflike carving to simulate feathers and shuttlecocks of the birds by applying the natural nature of the wood materials. Each model has its own meaing, namely hens and cocks, known as early birds, indicate diligence, hawks indicate richness, wagtails indicate hte prosperity of descendants, and such.
This rural elegance can be seen in the resulting distinctive sytle, which has no competition in the similar folk crafts.
